Department of Justice Approves County Redistricting

Redistricting process is going on as scheduled.

The United States Department of Justice approved Prince William County’s Redistricting Plan. The Voting Rights Act required the County to seek “preclearance,” or approval of the map, from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).

Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart credits the approval to the collaborative efforts involved in the plan: “The approval of the County’s redistricting plan is the culmination of a process that involved the entire community. The Board heard input from the Human Rights Commission, the NAACP, various community groups and many individuals. Clearly this Board worked diligently to make certain we had district lines that were fair and equitable to the demographics and population of Prince William County, and the Department of Justice agreed.”

The Board of County Supervisors unanimously passed the redistricting plan on Monday, April 18, 2011, and submitted the plan to the DOJ on April 22, 2011. The plan was a direct result of input and collaboration between the Board of County Supervisors, the citizens of Prince William County and County staff. The new plan redrew the boundaries of the seven magisterial districts to account for the dramatic growth in the County’s population during the past 10 years and the uneven distribution of the additional population.
