General Assembly Honors Fallen PWC Officer Chris Yung
Yung's family was present at the capital as Del. Jackson Miller introduced a resolution in his honor.
The Virginia General Assembly this week passed a resolution honoring Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung, who died in the line of duty on New Year's Eve.
With Yung's family by his side at a ceremony Wednesday, Del. Jackson Miller (R-50th district), a former Prince William County police officer, spoke before the House of Delegates on Monday about Yung and the resolution. H.R. 123 (and S.J. 332) honors Yung's life and service to the Commonwealth. It is also patroned by another former Prince William officer, Sen. Bryce Reeves (R-17th district).
"Your daddy was a hero," Miller told Christopher, Clayton and Paige, the officer's young children.
According to authorites, Yung was driving through a green light with his lights and sirens on when a woman on Nokesville Road made a left turn and crashed into his motorcycle. He passed away shortly afterwards at a local hospital — only the third officer from the Prince William County Police Department to die in the line of duty.
"Chris Yung was a special man," Miller said. "He was a man of service, with a heart of service. He joined the Marine Corps and went into combat operations, where he volunteered to change his [specialty] to mortuary services. And the reason he did that is he wanted to make sure that his fellow Marines were treated with the dignity and honor they deserved for serving and dying for their country."
"On behalf of the house of delegates, I want to let his family know that we greatly appreciate his service and his honor to this Commonwealth of Virginia," he added.
After Miller spoke, the General Assembly gave the family a standing ovation.
"Mrs. Yung, on behalf of the entire house, I want to express our deep-felt sympathy," William Howell, speaker of the house, told the family. "We can never do enough or say enough to make up for what you've lost, but please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you."
