Viewfinder: Potomac Library Groundbreaking Ceremony

Prince William County Library System held a groundbreaking ceremony at Potomac Library to inaugurate the construction of the Potomac Plaza Project.

The space, previously unused, will serve as a reading and play area.  Former Library Branch Manager Trudi Sommerfield generated the idea and shared it with Library System Director Dick Murphy, who said in a press release, “She wanted to be able to offer programs outside and utilize all of this outdoor grassy area for children and programming.  We are delighted that we are now moving forward on this project.”

Director Dick Murphy, Chair of the Library Board of Trustees Burk Andrews, Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi, and President of the Prince William County Library System Foundation Bryanna Altman each spoke during the ceremony.

Members of the Library Board of Trustees and the Prince William Public Library System Foundation broke ground shortly before 3 p.m., smiling as they took turns shoveling small amounts of soil.

An official fundraising even is scheduled for Oct. 5. Patrons may purchase engraved bricks during the event. Bryanna Altman said, "We invite all of you to come out and let your family and friends know that they can leave a legacy here on the Plaza at Potomac [Library]."

Patrons are advised to call the Library’s Marketing and Development Office at 703-792-6194 for more information on the fundraising brick project.

Construction will begin sometime in the fall with a completion date set for summer 2012.
