New Virginia senator says first order of business is to work on good solutions to nation's debt.
Tim Kaine (D), Virginia's newly-elected U.S. Senator, says his first order of business will be to lobby for longterm solutions for the country's fiscal situation. Kaine held a press conference in Richmond on Wednesday, one day after he defeated former Virginia governor and senator George Allen (R) in the general election. Kaine, governor of the state from 2006-10, earned 52 percent of the vote to Allen's 48 on Tuesday. Kaine takes over the seat vacated by Sen. Jim Webb (D), who is retiring after one term. A letter to the editor, submitted to Woodbridge Patch on Nov. 8 by Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi: Dear Woodbridge Residents, Election Day is perhaps the greatest expression of our democracy. I would like to thank each and every person that made it to the polls on Tuesday to cast their vote. As many of you know firsthand, there were excessively long lines at several Woodbridge voting locations. As I went from precinct to precinct, I was amazed and uplifted by the positive, patient, and determined citizens waiting in line, as well as the hardworking and empathetic Election Day volunteers. Update 10:04 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 - With all Virginia precincts finally reporting, President Barack Obama received 1,868,191 votes from Virginia voters, according to final but unofficial data from the Virginia State Board of Elections. That's 50.57 percent of the vote. Gov. Mitt Romney received 1,767,692 votes, or 47.85 percent. The three third-party candidates on the ballot received a combined 1.42 percent of votes, and write-in candidates the remainder. The presidential race is the main incentive for many to vote in this election.
Update, 4:20 p.m.: By about 3 p.m., the lines at some Lake Ridge precincts were beginning to dwindle. At McCoart, 1,371 out of 2,788 registered voters had voted by 3:10 p.m., not counting the absentee ballots. Election officer Nicholas Handres projected a turnout of 2,105 voters in the precinct by the time the polls closed. "Hold me to that," he said, smiling. At Chinn, 1,235 out of 2,696 registered voters had voted by 3:20 p.m. not counting the absentee ballots. Election officers would not give a projected total number of voters for the day. Voters in the Woodbridge area of Prince William County went to the polls Tuesday to choose a president, senator, representative and to vote on two consitutional amendments. Woodbridge District voters largely voted for Democrats in each race. President Barack Obama, a Democrat, won re-election against former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the GOP nominee in the presidential race. There were several third-party candidates in the race for president, as well. The U.S. Senate race in Virginia lived up to its reputation going into Tuesday's election, as being a tight race between two former governors. Final unofficial results around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday showed Tim Kaine with 51.89 percent of the state vote to Republican challenger George Allen's 47.92 percent of the vote across Virginia. Kaine won by comfortable margins in Northern Virginia jurisdictions, defeating Allen 71.40 percent to 28.42 percent in Falls Church; 60.53 percent to 39.01 percent in Fairfax County; and 65.83 to 33.86 percent in Arlington County, according to the State Board of Elections. Changes to eminent domain and veto session scheduling pass by wide margins.
Virginia residents voted to pass two amendments to the Virginia Constitution when they went out to the polls Tuesday. About 75 percent of voters, more than 2.3 million people, voted "yes" to amending the state's eminent domain policies. The measure will prohibit local governments from using eminent domain for economic development and job creation. The measure was a bit less popular in localities such as Fairfax County, where 62 percent of voters decided to pass the amendment. Question 2, which will allow the General Assembly to postpone its veto session in the event of scheduling conflicts of religious holidays, was much more popular.
