Earth Day: Make the Earth a Better Place

Patch's ideas for recognizing Earth Day.

  1. Six Weeks to Make a Difference: Prince William County Public Works has run this program of events to care for natural resources. The final event is the Metz Wetland Cleanup on April 30 from 9 a.m. to noon.
  2. Support Public Transit: According to the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, public transportation helps reduce carbon emission by over 37 million metric tons a year. Find out how you can support public transportation by texting “TRANSIT” to 86677 to join the "I <3 Transit" campaign. You can also get information by following the campaign's twitter,@ihearttransit.
  3. Plant trees: Related to Earth Day, Arbor Day is April 29, but Prince William County recognizes April as Arbor Month. The signature event this year will take place in Manassas, where volunteers with plant 150 trees to help improve air quality and protect the Bull Run stream. For more information, contact Nicole Ethier at the Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District at 703-594-3621.
  4. Prince William Conservation Alliance: Find out about supporting this group that works to protect the local environment. While you're at it, join the group on Saturday, April 23 for a tour of the Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge. Protecting nearly two miles of Prince William's Potomac River shoreline at the confluence of Neabsco Creek with the Potomac, this is a great place to see undisturbed wildlife.
  5. Prince William Clean Community Council: Check out the CCC and join its annual Spring Cleanup Campaign, a county-wide cleanup that runs through June 31. You can also get information about the group's Adopt-a-Spot program, or get materials to help you get started cleaning up your neighborhood. Your local Patches will be participating in a clean up effort on April 30. If you are interested in helping us clean up a portion of the roads, contact editor Lauren Jost at laurenj at patch.com.
