Hurricane Irene Created Perfect Atmosphere For Mosquitos

Getting eaten alive?

Millions of residents along the East Coast are contending with more mosquitos than usual, and it's all due to Hurricane Irene. Standing water and muggy conditions make for perfect mosquito mating conditions.

"The mosquitoes that are plaguing the Mid-Atlantic area right now are a result of the hurricanes and tropical storms that have recently passed through," said Janet McAllister, an entomologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to USA Today.

Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, Massachusetts and New Jersey have been swarmed by mosquitos. While fewer cases have been reported, West Nile Virus is still a threat.
