Prepare for Flu Season in Woodbridge

Where to get flu shots, how to arm yourself this sickness season.

What is the flu?

The flu, more scientifically known as influenza, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. The flu can cause mild to severe illness and, in some instances, lead to death. Flu symptoms can include any or all of the following:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever
  • Body aches
  • Runny nose and/or congestion
  • Tiredness

The flu is not the same as a cold, although they share many of the same symptoms. The cold is caused by a different virus and tends to have milder symptoms than the flu. Colds are also less likely to cause serious complications.

Why should you get a flu shot?

"No one wants to deal with the misery of the flu, and just a few common-sense steps can help reduce your chance of getting the flu this year. One of the most important is to get a flu shot, which is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Flu shots are particularly important for young children, pregnant women, people with some chronic health conditions like asthma and diabetes, and people over age 65." - Dr. Rashid Mohiuddin, The Health Center's Medical Director
