Prince William County, Woodbridge Offer Cooling Centers

Prince William County offers cooling centers to assist residents in staying cool when temperatures reach 95 degrees or higher.

Thursday's high temperature is expected to be around 97 degrees, with a heat index making it feel as hot as 107 degrees. 

The drop-in center for the homeless, located at 14370 Potomac Mills Rd., will offer expanded hours until 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The address is 14730 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge. For more information call 703-897-0199. 

For senior citizens the centers in and Woodbridge at 13850 Church Hill Drive, will extend their hours to 8 p.m., Monday – Friday, to serve citizens age 55 and older on days when temperatures exceed 95 degrees.

The county recommends that those without air conditioning spend a few hours at one of the county libraries like or , or head to the . Residents may also visit county government buildings, such as the and the James J. McCoart Administration Building during business hours to cool down.

The Department of Fire & Rescue reminds you to be careful when the temperatures are high. Symptoms to look out for include:

1. High body temperature (above 103)
2. Red, hot, dry skin (no sweating)
3. Rapid, strong pulse
4. Throbbing headache
5. Dizziness
6. Nausea
