Viewfinder: The First Signs of Fall

This week's Viewfinder presents a gallery of photographs taken at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Although I photographed for Patch in May, I wanted to return in hopes of capturing a change in foliage and flora.

Not only did the landscape of wildflowers become more abundant in the past five months, but a slight reddening of leaves dotted certain trees with the promise of autumn.

The morning of Sept. 16 was cool and brisk and while walking the trails, I came upon a group of men peering into roadside bushes with keen interest.  They were members of the Audubon Society, cataloguing insects and birds for recurring wildlife surveys.

This happy encounter led me to ask them if I could tag along on their next surveying adventure.  Luckily for me, they accepted. Please read next week's photo essay as I'll produce a gallery of nature photographs to enliven interviews with key regional members of the Audubon Society.  Stay tuned!
