Weekend Picks: Civil War Christmas, Gingerbread for a Cause, and Library Party

Want ideas for how to get out of the house this weekend? Woodbridge Patch is here to help with your weekend planner.

Where/When: Carlyle House, 121 North Fairfax Street Old Town Alexandria, Saturday Dec. 10, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Why Go: Step into the Carlyle House as it might have been in 1861.  On display will be a Victorian Christmas tree, decorated with presents and popcorn, stockings by the fire, mistletoe and holly. Enjoy period music and hot apple cider as you warm up your hearts with holiday cheer. Take a break from the fast pace of the season and experience the unique charm and history of candlelit Old Town Alexandria. Tour Gadsby's Tavern Museum, Carlyle House, Lee-Fendall House and the Apothecary in any order. A complimentary shuttle runs on a continuous loop between the sites. This year’s theme commemorates the Civil War in Alexandria. Purchase tickets here.

Pricing: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, $5 for children ages six to seventeen.

Why Go: You are invited to come build a gingerbread house and help children fighting cancer. Bring a packaged toy donation for Trevor's Treasures (please no stuffed animals, only toys that can be whipped down before entering the Pediatric Oncoloty Unit).

Pricing: Free, please bring a toy donation.

Why Go: Bring your children aged two through six to participate in crafts and stories featuring “Bears Bedtime.” No prior registration is required and drop-ins are welcome.

Why Go: The Potomac Community Library and the Friends of Potomac Library want to thank their patrons for their support by holding an open house featuring a string trio, crafts, and other activities for the whole family. Refreshments will be provided and be sure to pick up a coupon for a free book at the next book sale in March.

Pricing: Free. 

5. Civil War Christmas

Where/When: Mt. Zion Historic Park, 40309 John Mosby Highway Aldie, Sunday Dec. 11, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why Go: Learn what it was like for soldiers, in both blue and gray, far from home and in the midst of the Civil War during the holiday season.  Members of the 28th Virginia Regiment will celebrate the holiday with visitors as it was done in war time during the 1860s.  Experience the customs they brought in to camp, help to decorate their Christmas tree, and enjoy refreshments from the time period.  Donations will be accepted to be forwarded to the USO to benefit our soldiers on duty and away from home during this holiday season.  For more information, contact Site Supervisor Tracy J.
