Sentara Now Using 3D Mammography in Woodbridge

This new technology may help with earlier breast cancer diagnosis.

Sentara Healthcare is now offering new 3D mammography imaging technology to assist in early breast cancer diagnosis. In the Woodbridge area, Sentara is offering this service at its Lake Ridge location on Minnieville Road.

“The addition of 3D mammography is one of biggest breakthroughs in mammography in the last 30 years,” said Tina Banson, M.D., fellowship trained Sentara mammographer. “It’s allowing us to see cancers we wouldn’t otherwise see."

With traditional mammography, the two dimensional imaging functions more like an X-ray, making it difficult to find smaller cancers that hide in breast tissue layers. With 3D mammography, radiologists are able to view very thin layers of breast tissues, looking at individual images of each layer, and spotting abnormalities or cancers that might not be visible with traditional mammography. 3D technology may be especially helpful to people with denser breast tissue or people with a family history of breast cancer.
