Now That’s Entertainment!

Making daily rounds on the web in lieu of television.

I don’t watch television. That’s one of the ways I have more time in my day. It’s awkward when people talk about shows they watch, stars they like, plots they are following. I’m lost when friends talk TV.

I do seek entertainment I just don’t find it on television. Nearly every day of my life begins with a journey and a click of the mouse. I have a certain routine I follow, beginning early in the morning. I cruise some fun spots to start my day in the right frame of mind. I like to visit wimp.com first. There are usually five new entries every day. Some are funny, some are unusual, and many just make you say, “Wow!”

If I get up especially early I make time for a TED video. That’s an amazing place to learn, see and hear innovation, or seek explanation for the myriad topics that flit through our consciousness. Ted talks are almost always less than 20 minutes in length and some are intriguing just by their title, like: “What’s a snollygoster?”

By this time, I’ve begun to mix in some work while I cruise, alternating answering email with a few choices from Maniac World, another site I visit just for entertainment. There are new entries every day. Mostly short video clips, but some stills and cartoons. If you think you’d like to see a bunch of tourist kids be chased by a buffalo, some cute pet clips, and some quick, “make you laugh out loud” entries, this site is a good bet.

Recently, I’ve been taking longer to get going on my day because I’ve become addicted to cruising the blogs. You may not realize it, but not everyone blogs like I do! I try to avoid politics in my blogs, and while I do sometimes tackle controversial topics, most of my writing is an attempt to engage you readers in the care and development of community. I share information, promote non-profits, talk about community issues and strive to heighten awareness of problems in our neighborhoods that could benefit from your involvement.

There are plenty of people writing local blogs about current events and hot button items addressing issues like politics and other newsworthy topics. There have been several new blogs develop this year and numerous blogs that have been around for many years. Most people who blog have strong opinions and a passion for their point of view. Often, these bloggers are controversial and have arisen from a challenge they could not ignore.

My friend, Bill Golden, is a man of many talents and interests as well as successful business man. He has developed numerous web sites, mostly devoted to military or intelligence fields, like his: USA Job Zoo . He creates online publications like: Prince William Life where he combines some of his interests and promotes local events. Recently, he developed a new site: PWC Politics.com where he has collected many local bloggers submissions in one location. If you’d like to discover some of the controversies in Prince William County, this is a one stop shop for right wing, left wing and centrist philosophies. Radical, moderate and liberal points of view are all here, along with some lessons in local economics and no small measure of rumor, gossip and innuendo.
I don’t think I’m missing anything by not watching TV. I get drama, action, humor and education every day in small doses that I can intersperse between other activities.

I guess I better wrap this up. I still have to hit Twitter, Face book, Google+, and Linked In. If you click any of those four links, you can find me there, too!
