300 Take Shelter at Woodbridge High, Red Cross Can't Accept Item Donations

American Red Cross has stated that they have the products and services necessary to meet the needs of those at the shelter and requested no products be delivered as it will detract from their ability to manage the situation

Just before 6 p.m. on Friday, the county announced that 300 people have taken shelter at Woodbridge Senior High School after their homes were deemed uninahbitable by inspectors.

The flooding greatly affected two mobile home communities, Marumsco Hills and Holly Acres, knocking out power and water. Holly Acres suffered the brunt of the flood's damage more than half of those homes have been deemed unfit for habitation.

"The American Red Cross and the Department of Social Services will work with those in the shelter to access services available to them as they seek permanent housing opportunities," said Nikki Brown assistant director of communications for the county in an e-mail. "The American Red Cross cannot accept drop-in volunteers at the shelter due to security concerns. Also, the American Red Cross has stated that they have the products and services necessary to meet the needs of those at the shelter and requested no products be delivered as it will detract from their ability to manage the situation."

Residents can donate money to the Red Cross locally by calling 703-368-4511, donations can be earmarked for Prince William County.
