Apple's News Conference is All About the Music

Apple held a news conference today announcing its new products for the holiday season. New iPod Touch, Ping social music and AirPlay streaming music are some of the highlights.

Apple hosted a new product presentation yesterday and as with most Apple announcements, fans are already filling out their wishlists.  So what can you expect to see on a few "Dear Santa" letters or birthday lists?

  • New iPod Touch 4--the new iPhone without the phone gets all of the features that came with the latest version of the iPhone.  Thinner, prettier screen, cameras on front and back to support the videochat feature FaceTime
  • New iTunes10--Apple recently acquired Ping (a social music service) and has integrated into the new version of iTunes.  Connect with your friends, see what they are listening to, follow artists and other music discovery features.  This brings iTunes closer to Microsoft Zune's music offerings.
  • Upgraded software for the iPad (coming in November) and the other phone and media devices (next week) that will allow you to stream your iTunes content wirelessly using AirPlay on your iPad and that fixes some bugs (especially for the iPhone's issues) and improves photo and gameplay on the portable devices.
  • Apple TV comes in at a new lower price, $99, and integrates Netflix, adds AirPlay in November, and other content.  No local storage.
  • New versions of the Nano and the Shuffle.
