Buying Smart When Buying Used

If you aren't the type who needs to have the latest gadget on release day, buying your tech second-hand can be a great way to get performance at a low price.

Buying used or refurbished gadgets and other technology is a great way to get performance at a greatly reduced price. We feel comfortable buying used cars and used houses, why not give used technology a try? Some items that you might want to consider buying used are laptops, cell phones, media players, televisions or game consoles.

There are three main ways to purchase used tech:

  • Refurbished from the manufacturer or authorized online retailer.  This is the safest way to buy used technology, as it usually comes with factory warranties and return policies. You receive all of the documentation and accessories that shipped with the new version. You can easily save 25-40 percent off new items. Best option for big ticket items.
  • Other retailers selling used or refurbished tech. Stores like GameStop (Woodbridge has three locations) sells used game consoles and games.  Some electronics or computer stores may carry used phones or computers. The key here is to know the store's return policies and if they offer any warranties. The prices should be low enough to cover the risk you face if the product stops working after the initial return period. Best option for mid-priced items.
  • Used items from individuals, pawn shops and thrift shops. This is the "buyer beware" situation at its truest. Prices should be at least 70 percent off, if not pennies on the dollar; there are bargains to be found. Try out ACTS Thrift Store or the Salvation Army Family Store. If you are shopping online, I recommend trying to buy local so that you can do an in-person transaction. Arrange to meet a public place such as a library or police station parking lot to reduce your risk. Make sure the product powers up and that the crucial accessories such as a power cord are included. Realize that you are taking a risk, but this is the best shot at getting that ridiculously low price.  Best option for gadgets and other non-essential items.
