Category 2 Hurricane May Fizzle Out in Virginia

Earl, once a threat, is dwindling fast.

Update: As of 2 p.m., the National Hurricane Center has cancelled a tropical storm warning for Virginia.

The National Hurricane Center predicts that Hurricane Earl, now a Category 2 storm as of 8 a.m. this morning, will continue to weaken over the next 36 hours due to an increasing vertical wind shear and cooler sea temperatures.

Virginia has been downgraded to a tropical storm warning, but the state of emergency declaration from Gov. McDonnell still stands.

Woodbridge has a chance of isolated showers today, but the weekend forecast predicts that Hurricane Earl will not affect Labor Day plans.

Earl is expected to make a turn towards the north-northeast as the hurricane goes through an extratropical transition -- which could produce mild showers, gale winds or a nasty thunderstorm.
