Local Air Force Captain Killed in Afghanistan

Capt. Brandon L. Cyr, 28, of Woodbridge, died Saturday in a plane crash.

A Woodbridge Air Force captain was killed Saturday in a plane crash in Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Capt. Brandon L. Cyr, 28, was assigned to the 906th Air Refueling Squadron, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Cyr died with three others near Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, in the crash of an MC-12 aircraft, according to the Department of Defense. The cause of the crash is under investigation, however initial reporting indicates there was no enemy activity in the area.

The Washington Post has put together a brief profile with comments from friends, family and military commanders, including a statement from Col. Peter Nezamis, commander of the Illinois National Guard’s 126th Air Refueling Wing.

‘‘It was this mission more than any other he wanted the most," Nezamis said.

Col. David Almand, 375th AMW commander, also commented on the loss in a release from Scott Air Force Base.

"He was an outstanding pilot and a dedicated Airman," Almand said. "Our hearts are heavy, and we're doing all that we can to provide support and comfort to members of his family during this difficult time. Our hearts also go out to families of the other Airmen who lost their lives as well."
