NORAD Flight Exercise Planned for Wednesday Night

Don't be alarmed if you hear low-flying jets

  • From NORAD:

North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and its geographical component, the Continental United States NORAD Region (CONR), will conduct an exercise – Falcon Virgo 11-11 beginning Wednesday night, Aug. 24 at midnight into early Thursday morning, Aug. 25, in the National Capital Region.

Flights in the National Capital Region are scheduled to take place between midnight and 1:30 a.m. EDT Thursday morning. In the event of inclement weather, the exercise will take place the next day at the same time.

This is an invaluable program for USAF and USAF Auxiliary (Civil Air Patrol) aircrews. Several years ago, I oversighted Falcon Virgo missions and soon learned that it was a valuable training and exercise program that furthered the air intercept mission in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Thanks for the comment, Rich! As wife of a retired USAF, I understood exactly what you meant, but it's good that all citizens to understand the planes don't fly just to make noise :-)
Lauren, maybe we could get a little more explicit explanation regarding the air intercept mission and why that is necessary? Also, what role does the CAP (Civil Air Patrol) play?

In its role as the USAF Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol flies non-combat missions at the direction of the Secretary of the Air Force (search and rescue, disaster relief, counterdrug, border patrol, etc). One of these missions is to probe protected airspace (in this instance, DC) to trigger a response by USAF interceptors as part of their training/readiness. At one time, I was part of that mission, hence my comment.
