The two power companies in the area are readying crews and equipment

  • Turn off major appliances such as heat pumps, water heaters and stoves. Unplug other appliances such as TVs, stereos, microwaves and computers. This will prevent damage to appliances and possible overloads to the company's system when power is restored.
  • Post a list of contents on your freezer door to minimize the number of times you open it.
  • Leave one lamp or light on so you will be able to recognize when power is restored.
  • If using portable or camp-type stoves or lanterns for cooking and lighting, ensure that the area is adequately ventilated.

NOVEC recommends that if power goes out:

  • If you see downed power lines and poles, stay away. Even debris near power lines could be energized. Notify NOVEC immediately.
  • Open freezers and refrigerators only when necessary.
  • Use portable generators, camp stoves, or grills outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Alternatively, heat food in a chafing dish or fondue pot over canned fuel.

Both companies advise that residents should have battery-operated radios, at least three gallons of fresh water per person on hand, have a good supply of canned and other non-refrigerated foods available, have pet food readily available, have identification and documentation ready to grab.
