Prince William Ice Center to Host Junior Speedskating Championships

The 2013 U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating Championships are Jan. 25-27.

The Prince William Ice Center will host the 2013 U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating Championships later this month, from Jan. 25 through Jan. 27.

"These top junior speed skaters hit speeds of 30 mph plus. It's one of the most thrilling spectator sports ever," Meet Director Lovey Russo said.

More than 75 top short-track speedskating teens will compete for eight U.S. spots at the World Junior Short Track Championships in late February in Warsaw, Poland.

"The Junior Nationals are an important stepping stone to a possible future Olympic Games selection, in a sport where more U.S. Winter Olympic medals have been won than in any other sport," read a release from U.S. Speedskating and the U.S. Junior National Short-Track Speedskating Championships.

The Prince William Ice Center was recently rebuilt after a February 2010 snowstorm destroyed it. The center hosted the 2012 U.S. Junior National Championships.
