Weekend Planner: Labor Day Edition

The first weekend of September is here, Hurricane Earl is gone and Weekend Planner: Labor Day Edition has some suggestions for things to do.

Sports:
Take advantage of Old Hickory Golf Club's online special rates for tee times. This offer is good through October.

Support the Northern Virginia Soccer Club by shopping at Dick's Sporting Goods on Sept. 4 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Members that print out a letter from the group's website will obtain valuable coupons and a 15 percent discount on purchases.

Volunteer:
Use your labor day weekend to do some beneficial labor! Volunteer at Leesylvania State Park for International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Meet at the visitor's center for sign-in.

Yard sales:
14014 Giles Street, Sunday from 8 a.m.-12 noon. Items for sale include patio table with umbrella, kids toys, women's, juniors and small girl's clothes, pet supplies, picture frames and other miscellaneous items.

Movies:
Opening Sept. 9 at AMC Potomac Mills 18 are Machete and Going the Distance. Machete is an intense thriller starring Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and Robert DeNiro. While Going the Distance is a romantic comedy starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. Get your tickets for these and other movies here.

Music:
Take a short drive to see Jimmy Buffet at Jiffy Lube Live on Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets available at livenation.com or stubhub.com. American Giant is playing at Hard Times Café & Cue on Saturday night. There is a $5 cover charge.

At the National Harbor this entire Labor Day Weekend, the British invasion returns. Abbey Road on the River, the world's largest Beatles-inspired festival, began yesterday and runs until Aug. 6 and tickets are available online.
