After a long night of high gusty winds from Hurricane Irene, Northern Virginia remained largely unscathed Sunday morning.

Jason Grant, Prince William County's communications director, sent an

update via email at 6 a.m. to say that the brunt of the storm had passed.

No major flooding to report, and Fire & Rescue and Police crews were able to respond quickly to reported problems with roadways being blocked and traffic signal outages so all roadways remain open at this time. Dominion Virginia Power is reporting approximately 2,700 customers without power and NOVEC approximately 1,800 customers.

Residents are reminded that removal of fallen trees or debris on their property remains the responsibility of the property owner. The County landfill will be open to residents during regularly scheduled hours for those needing to haul away debris from their properties. Those hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and Monday through Saturday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for residential and non-commercial use only. Commercial users and refuse users may access the landfill Monday through Saturday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. only.

If there are trees and debris in public rights of way, storm drains and streams, please contact the Public Works Department at 703-792-7070. In the event of life-threatening situations, please call 9-1-1, and for all non-emergency issues, please call 703-792-6500.

If there are trees or limbs down on a power line, residents should not attempt to remove the tree or come near the power line. They should call 9-1-1 to report the issue.

Residents with concerns regarding potential contamination of their well water should contact the Health Department at 703-792-6300.

The rain is supposed to stop today, but the area could experience some high winds still.

Residents wrote on the Woodbridge Patch Facebook page to say they spent the night with family indoors, mostly with power on. The Dominion Power outage map shows that mostly residents east of Interstate 95 are without power.
