State Sen. Charles Colgan to Retire

Longest serving member of the General Assembly says he won't seek another term.

Sen. Charles Colgan, D-Prince William, the longest serving member of the Virginia General Assembly, will retire next year, according to media reports, including The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Colgan, 87, has served in the senate since 1976. The District 29 map includes Manassas, Manassas Park, Dale City and portions of Gainesville, Bristow and Woodbridge.

The Washington Post notes that Republicans are interested in picking up the seat to cement their control of the Senate. But the district went to Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat, in the 2013 election.

The Prince William Times notes Colgan has eyed retirement before, but this time he means it.
