Woodbridge Election Results: Steady Turnout, Quiet Voters

Voter turnout has been steady and quiet so far.

Update, 11 p.m.:

According to unofficial results from the Virginia State Board of Elections website, Loree Williams is the new Woodbridge District school board member, beating out incumbent Steven Keen by about 23 percentage points.

Republican incumbent Del. Scott Lingamfelter was narrowly reelected to represent the 31st District, winning just 50.41 percent of the vote in unofficial results tallied tonight. Republican incumbent Del. Rich Anderson had a wider margin in his victory over Reed Heddleston, winning 53.44 percent of the vote in the 51st District.

In Occoquan, Joseph McGuire is the newly elected town council member, beating incumbent Barry Dean by about 17 percentage points.

Original story:

Rosa Thompson almost didn't make it to her polling place tonight. On the way back from a full day of work at Fort Belvoir, the Army nurse nearly missed her turn.

But she slipped through the sliding glass doors at the McCoart polling place at County Complex Court with seconds to spare, one of three voters to make it in the nick of time.

"I'm very happy to be able to vote," Thompson said after she left, looking a little relieved. "Sometimes in the military, we don't get to vote."

Thompson was one of almost 1250 voters to vote at McCoart today, out of a total of 2708 registered voters.

After the overwhelming turnout for the 2012 presidential election, the more moderate voting numbers in Woodbridge area precincts today seemed sparse by comparison. In reality, the turnout was steady throughout the day, with roughly 30 percent of registered voters turning out by mid-afternoon in some precincts.

"I think it went well," McCoart Chief Election Officer Gayle Wix said. "Busier than we expected."

Despite a Woodbridge area election officer describing gubernatorial races as "always nasty," local polling places today were fairly quiet.

At Lynn Precinct, 339 out of 3079 registered voters had voted by 1:42 p.m. Chief Election Officer Bill Snyder joked that though numbers weren't as high as during the presidential election, at least it was "unlike Chicago, with dead people voting."

"We had about ten voters in line when we opened the polls," Snyder said. "In comparison to November [of 2012], nothing." He jokingly recalled presidential election lines as being "all the way down to Route 1."

Over at McCoart, numbers rose steadily throughout the day. Wix said voters were well-behaved, and that the only real glitch was a few people not being entirely sure about ID requirements. At 2:12 p.m. at Chinn, 562 out 2609 registered voters had voted.

The gubernatorial race between Ken Cuccinelli and Terry McAuliffe is hotly contested, but the results of the race between Woodbridge District school board candidates Loree Williams and Steven Keen may have more of a direct effect on your family, with their differing perspectives on the school budget challenges.

In addition, Democrat Jeremy McPike is running against Republican incumbent Del. Scott Lingamfelter in the 31st district. Democrat Reed Heddleston is running against Republican incumbent Del. Rich Anderson in the 51st district.
