Fairfax and Prince William Connecting Counties to Clean Up Route 1 Corridor

The goal is to clean up the Route 1 Corridor from I-95 Huntington to the entrance of Quantico Marine Base at Joplin Road.  This thirty-three mile stretch will be cleaned up by volunteers from Fairfax and Prince William Counties.   This is the first time Fairfax and Prince William Counties have collaborated to work on this type of event.  The Route 1 Cleanup will be held in conjunction with the 2011 Keep America Beautiful Great America Cleanup Campaign.

Prince William County’s portion of the event (thirteen miles) is being coordinated by Prince William Clean Community Council an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. PWC’s boundaries will begin at Route 1 and Annapolis Way and end at Route 1 & Joplin Road (Entrance to Quantico Marine Base).

Please join the groups that have already signed up to help are, Woodbridge Beautification Committee, Harvest Life Changers Church, New Life Anointed Christian Church, Patch.com and Quantico Marine Base.

Volunteers and sponsors are needed to help with the cleanup and provide refreshments.  We are also looking for help from the police department to patrol Route 1 to help with traffic control.  We are reaching out to business owners along the Route to support the event by providing refreshments and cleaning up the area around their store fronts.

Because of safety reasons, we must ask that volunteers are 16 years old or older.  Volunteers under the age of 16 must be supervised by an adult (5 youth to 1 adult) and be limited to the areas they are permitted to work.  One way that youth under age 16 can get involved is to host refreshment stations along the cleanup route.

Prince William Clean Community Council (the Council), has partnered with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) who will provide trash bags and loan out safety vests.

The Council will hold an orientation for the leaders of the coordinating groups in PWC.  The date and time is yet to be determined.  If you are interested in helping by volunteering, making donations or providing refreshments, please contact Brenda Evans, bevans@pwcleancouncil.org or Kayne Karnbach, kkarnbach@pwcleancouncil.org or call 571-285-3772.
