Roger “Skip” Benyo Jr.

Roger “Skip” William Benyo Jr. of Montclair died unexpectedly on Friday May 2nd, 2014. 

Visitation will be held from 2-4 PM and 6-8PM on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home. Services will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 18825 Fuller Heights Road, Triangle, VA 22172 on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 11AM.

Skip was born in Wyandotte, Michigan on May 10, 1958 as the first child to Nancy and Roger Benyo Sr. In 1976 Skip graduated from Monroe Catholic Central, Monroe, MI, where he met and married his high school sweetheart Suzanne Marie Herzog on January 21, 1978. On 20 September 1976, Skip enlisted in the United States Navy as an Underwater Fire Control Systems Technician and Trident Defensive Weapons Subsystem / Command Subsystem Operations and Maintenance Technician. For the next 10 years Skip and Sue traveled the world living in Hawaii, Scotland, Washington, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. While serving in the Navy Skip progressed to the rank of First Class Petty Officer prior to being honorably discharged from the Navy on July 29, 1986. In 1986 Skip joined the department of defense where for the next 28 years he worked in a wide variety of positions in more locations than one could easily say. His dedication to duty and tireless efforts contributed greatly to the success of the NAVSEA mission. 

Skip was a devout Catholic and held the positions of Grand Knight of Potomac Council, Triangle, VA and District Deputy in the State of Virginia. He also served as an usher at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.

For all his professional accomplishments Skip will be remembered most for who he was as a person. Skip was a man who lived for his friends and family (and as you all know, everyone was his friend…they just didn’t know it yet). Whether you found him on his knees praying each Sunday morning, tending bar for all his friends, coaching, teaching or mentoring his children through the various activities they were involved in or spending those few and precious moments alone with his wife you knew without asking that the second you requested his help he would be there for you. Skip firmly believed that if you had the means and ability to help someone than it was your responsibility to do so. 

He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 36 years Suzanne Herzog Benyo. Their four children, Elizabeth Benyo Hendrickson, her two children Connor and Kylan, Sergeant First Class Nicholas Benyo, his wife Kristen, their three children Alice, Emma, and Eric; 2nd Class Petty Officer Andrew Benyo, his wife Jessica, their two children Paden and Keston, and Victoria Anne Benyo also by parents Roger and Nancy Benyo, three brother’s James, Patrick, and Michael, in-laws Jim and Jeanette Herzog, many sister and brother in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, loving friends and neighbors.

Skip was planning on retiring on May 30, 2014 and moving to Naples, Florida. Looking forward to traveling, visiting grandchildren and family, taking more cruises, long walks on the beach and many sunsets with his wife.
