Fatal Crash Snarls Traffic on I-95 in Prince William County

Authorities are in the final stages of clearing the wreckage from a fatal morning crash on I-95.

The accident took place at 11:15 a.m. near exit 152 in the Dumfries area, according to Virginia State Police. Lanes should reopen by 3:45 p.m., police said.

Authorities said a Nissan Versa was headed southbound on I-95 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a wall. The impact sent the Nissan airborne, where it landed on a Honda Civic that was also headed south on I-95.

The driver of the Civic, Matthew Wilkerson, 37, of Fredericksburg, died at the scene.

The man who was driving the Nissan and his passenger were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Their names have not been released. 

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Drivers can expect heavy delays on all southbound lanes of I-95 this afternoon as police investigate a fatal crash.

The accident took place at 11:15 a.m. near exit 152 in the Dumfries area. Virginia State Police reported at about noon.

One driver died at the scene, and the driver and passenger of the second car were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. 

All those involved are adults, police report. The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is on scene conducting its investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash. 

Southbound lanes will be closed for at least the next hour.  Southbound traffic is currently being diverted to the HOV lanes.
