Fire at Target Closes Store

Cause of fire determined accidental.

Just before noon Tuesday on Prince William Parkway was evacuated due to a fire inside the store.

Fire officials say that the fire was caused by a heat gun that was unintentionally left unattended on a workbench in a small maintenance room inside Target. 

Fire officials deemed the fire accidental, and no injuries were reported. The preliminary damage estimate is $15,000 said Prince William County Fire and Rescue Chief Joe Robertson.

Smoke damage is also being assessed and may increase the estimate loss. Robertson said the sprinkler system did activate and helped control the spread of the fire. 

Robertson also said that employees used portable fire extinguishers to control the fire. Target is closed for further assessment and clean up.

Representatives from the Health Department are currently on the scene performing a health and safety assessment.
