Improper Placement of Bug Bomb Creates Explosion

OWL VFD responded to the fire Wednesday evening.

Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, Dale City Fire Deparment and Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue crews worked an explosion call Wednesday night, that was caused by a bug bomb.

Although the original call for dispatch claimed an explosion, crews arrived on scene to find no fire at the 14400 block of Gemstone Drive. But, residents had used a bug bomb in the apartment that was too close to the stove. There was a small explosion that blew out the windows.

There were no injuries at the scene and damage estimates are still pending.

“Always read instructions carefully when working with flammable products” stresses OWL VFD Chief Jim McAllister in a prepared statement. “Never use this type of product near a heat source, ignition sources or open flame.  This means dryers, stoves, heaters and pilot lights. If you live in a multiple unit dwelling, tell your neighbors before use.”
