Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Collision With Vehicle on Route 1

Police say alcohol was likely a factor on the part of the pedestrian, who did not cross the road within the crosswalk.

A Woodbridge man was fatally injured on the evening of Aug. 25 when he attempted to cross Jefferson Davis Highway and stepped in front of a moving 2004 Ford Expedition going north, Prince William County police said.

Police responded to the 13700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway at 8:25 p.m. The driver of the Expedition stayed on scene. The pedestrian, identified as Noel Mejia Ayala, 34, of Woodbridge, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

"Alcohol appears to have been a factor on the part of the pedestrian who was attempting to cross the roadway outside of a designated crosswalk," a statement released by the PWC police public information office said.
