An officer discovered an armed robbery suspect while searching in a wooded area, but only after the suspect cried out for help for an injured leg, according to Prince William County Police.

Andrew Marcus Armstrong, 22, of the 14400 block of Artery Lane, is charged with attempted armed robbery and use of a firearm in a commission of a felony.

At 11:50 p.m. Sunday night, officers responded to the Bank of America at 4191 Dale Blvd. regarding an attempted robbery.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman of Woodbridge, told police that she was using the ATM when she was approached from behind by an unknown man. The man displayed a handgun and demanded her property, according to police.

The suspect fled on foot into a nearby wooded area before taking anything from the victim. After police established a perimeter, an officer heard a male voice calling out for help from the wooded area.

Armstrong was found lying on the ground, complaining of an injury to his leg, according to police spokesperson Officer Jonathan Perok.

"Officers learned that the accused discarded his outer clothing and the handgun used in the robbery," Perok said in a statement. "After a search, officers located the clothing and the gun a short distance away from where the accused was located."

Armstrong is being held without bond.
