Police: Suspect Ran Into Traffic on I-95 After Assaulting Bail Bondsman

A Police K-9 was bitten by a possibly rabid groundhog while searching for Davis, who was hit by a car on I-95.

Prince William County Police said a man out on bail rammed his bail bondsman's car Wednesday evening, struck him on the head with a stick, then ran into traffic on I-95, where he was hit by a car.

Reginald Charles Davis, 22, of Horizon Court in Woodbridge, is charged with malicious wounding, hit and run resulting in injury and hit and run resulting in property damage.

The wild chase began when the 46-year-old bondsman, a Reston resident, attempted to take Davis into custody on additional charges in another jurisdiction.

The bondsman had bailed Davis out of jail earlier that day. Davis had been charged with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer for allegedly slamming his front door on a police officer's leg, said police spokesman Officer Jonathan Perok.

The bail bondsman found Davis in a motel parking lot on the 900 block of Annapolis Way. Davis proceeded to ram the victim's vehicle multiple times, and also struck an unoccupied vehicle that happened to be parked in the lot, Perok said.

After Davis' vehicle was disabled, he fled on foot into woods nearby.

"The victim was able to catch up to the accused, at which point, the accused grabbed a stick and struck the victim multiple times to his head, knocking him to the ground," Perok said in a press release.

Police responded to the incident at 6:06 p.m., and dispatched a K-9 to search for Davis. As the K-9 named "Titan" and his handler entered the woods, a ground hog who may have been infected with rabies bit the dog. The K-9 handler shot and killed the animal to stop the attack. They continued the search after they received information that Davis was hiding near the I-95 overpass and Occoquan Road.

The K-9 found Davis, but Davis jumped over the barrier, into traffic on I-95 North, Perok said. A passing motorist struck him, and police were able to take him into custody. Davis was taken to a hospital as a precaution, but was discharged and taken to the county jail.

Police have collected the groundhog for testing. The dog, Titan, had minor injuries and is being monitored.

Davis is held without bond pending an Aug. 28 court date.
