Woodbridge, Prince William County Brush Fires Prompts Biggest Response in 30 Years

Over 300 acres of county land were burned in six brush fires yesterday.

prompted the most extensive fire and rescue response in more than thirty years. Nearly 300 acres of the county were burned and Interstate 95 temporarily closed because of the fires.

All units of career and volunteer fire stations were deployed Saturday to deal with the overwhelming fire response. Fire and rescue units also came in from Fairfax, Stafford and Arlington counties as well as the City of Alexandria and Quantico Marine Corps Base.

“This was the busiest day I have experienced in my 31-year career with Prince William County,” said Chief Kevin McGee, Prince William Department of Fire and Rescue in a press release.

Saturday the Fire Marshal's office charged a 29-year-old male for the 25-acre fire behind K-Mart in Dale City after he improperly left residue of a trash fire in the wooded area. No injuries or structural damage were reported and the fire was brought under control. The area was cleared by 9:30 p.m.

No cause has been determined in the fire that sparked up near the Prince William Parkway and Smoketown Road. In this 25-acre brush fire, nineteen units responded. No injuries or structural damage was reported and the area was cleared by 10 p.m.

One firefighter was treated for exhaustion, but refused transport near the I-95 and Cardinal Drive fire. Eleven units responded to that 35-acre brush fire, but no cause has been determined yet. The fire was brought under control and cleared by 10 p.m.

Near the Northern Virginia Community College campus, five engines responded to yet another brush fire that ate up 10 acres. Again no structural damage or injuries were reported. The fire was brought under control by 9:30 p.m.. No cause has been determined.
