Board to Endorse Route 1 & 123 VDOT Project

At its afternoon session, the board will endorse the $236 million project.

The Board of County Supervisors is slated to endorse the $236 million Virginia Department of Transportation project to improve, update and widen the . 

This extensive project – which will widen Route 1 to six lanes from Annapolis Way to Mary's Way – will incur no cost on the county's behalf, as the funding comes from Governor Bob McDonnell's transportation fund. 

A public hearing on the matter was held at Botts Fire Hall in March and Supervisor Frank Principi held a to discuss the impact of the large project.

Business owners are greatly concerned that the massive overhaul for Route 1 will cut off access to their businesses. The county has echoed those concerns in documents for Tuesday's endorsement by asking that VDOT "maintain access to al businesses on Route 1, where possible, with the construction of Phase I and to limit the impact on existing businesses on Occoquan Road."

The county has also asked that VDOT reexamine noise mitigations for the Belmont Bay community, a concern expressed by several of the community's residents at the public hearing in March.
