Incumbents Puller, Barker in GOP Cross-Hairs

Two seats among those Republicans hope to nab in Tuesday's election

As Election Day nears, Virginia Republicans are keeping a close eye on several tight races across the state, hoping to wrest control of the state Senate away from the Democrats.

George Mason University Professor Mark Rozell told Reuters that if Republicans take the state Senate, it could spell trouble next year for President Obama, who won the state in 2008. Northern Virginia has seen visits in recent weeks from Michelle Obamasecond lady Jill Biden, former President  and GOP presidential hopeful .

At least two tight races—in the 36th and 39th Senate districts—are in Northern Virginia. The candidates in those races are state Sen. Linda "Toddy" Puller (D), running against Republican Jeff Frederick, and state Sen. George Barker (D), running against Republican attorney M. Miller Baker.

Frederick, a former delegate, was ousted as chairman of the state Republican party two years ago, but is hoping to make a comeback on Tuesday. Puller has represented the Mount Vernon area for 20 years in Richmond, the past 12 years as a state senator.
