Save this holiday weekend and prepare your family.

It's the perfect time to restock or create your family’s emergency kit! You can buy many of the items you need to have ready in case of a hurricane or other emergency tax free from May 25 through May 31, including Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

During this seven-day period, purchases of items designated by the Virginia Department of Taxation as hurricane preparedness equipment, including portable generators priced at $1,000 or less, are exempt from Virginia sales tax. Examples of allowable items include batteries, flashlights, bottled water, first aid kits, emergency or self-powered radios, duct tape, tarps and plastic sheeting priced $60 or less per item.
