Virginia Primaries: East PWC Voter Turnout Low

Woodbridge area voters cast their votes in Democratic primaries for the Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General nominations.

Only 1 percent of registered voters in the McCoart Precinct had voted by noon today, bringing the grand total of votes to 27.

Over at Chinn Precinct, only half a percent of registered voters had showed up by noon -- just 11 voters.

After a tiny group of voters this morning, "they've been coming about one an hour," an election officer said.

The empty voting rooms and nonexistant lines are typical of primaries in Virginia. Last year's Republican primaries also brought a low turnout, though noon numbers were still somewhat higher than this year's noon numbers.

McCoart Precinct Chief Officer Gayle Wix expressed disappointment at the low turnout, saying the primaries are still an important part of the political process.

"These are the poeple that are going to be running for the big show in November," Wix said.
