Widening U.S. 1 in Woodbridge: Project Update, Schedule

Road widening — and everything that goes with it — along U.S. 1, between Neabsco Mills and Featherstone roads, is running on schedule to be completed by the summer of 2016.

The $ 40-million project to widen the road from four to six lanes is divided into three phases:

• Phase I stretches between Neabsco Mills Road to Dale Boulevard;
• Phase II runs between Dale Boulevard and Delaware Drive; and
• Phase III runs from Delaware Drive to Featherstone Road.

A utility ductbank, or underground conduit for utility wires, has been completed on Phase I and rough grading is under way. Utility ductbank work has started on the Phase II section of the project. The County is in the process of acquiring rights-of-way for Phase III, and roadway and signal plans are in the final stages of approval with the Virginia Department of Transportation.  

Motorists should notice a difference in travel time when the project is completed. “This project, which consists of roadway improvements to widen Route 1, will increase traffic capacity and the flow of traffic,” said Prince William County Construction Manager Leonard Coleman. “It’s definitely going to provide relief.”

In addition to the widening, as well as burying overhead utility lines along the project route, there will be room at the sides of the road for pedestrians and cyclists. “Like many of our projects, we’re going to have a 6-foot wide sidewalk on the northbound side of Route 1 and a 10-foot shared-use path on the southbound side of Route 1,” Coleman said.

The project is part of the 2006 Bond Referendum approved by Prince William County voters. VDOT contributed $10 million to the project, and the Prince William Service Authority contributed $5 million to improve water and sewer utilities along the project route.
