Library Programs Aim to Reduce Summer Reading Slide

Prince William County Libraries this summer are focusing on keeping local students up on their reading skills.

“Summer reading is something we always like to encourage with kids,” said Lynn Hobbs, the youth services supervisor at Potomac Community Library. “Those who leave school and don’t pick up a book all summer tend to slide back three to four months on their reading level and go back to school reading at a lower reading level.”

Summer Quest 2014 aims to keep students interested in books and reading throughout the hot summer months and includes several different programs to encourage reading.

The animal-themed “Paws to Read” and “Wild Reads” programs reward students for reading books this summer. In addition to those programs, library events go beyond books to include duct tape projects, cooking programs, family craft night, trivia, shows and more.
