Prince William County Schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 23.

The current forecast for Thursday morning in Woodbridge calls for more cold temperatures, with some roads still dangerous from Tuesday's snowstorm school travel.

From the district:

On Thursday, January 23, 2014, all Prince William County Public Schools will be closed due to inclement weather in certain areas. Code Green for employees. All school division activities including Professional Development sessions are cancelled. SACC will not open.

"The decision to change the school schedule is not made lightly," Superintendent Steven Walts wrote in a letter to parents this fall.

The district's transportation staff monitor roads and weather conditions in busy and remote travel areas of the county. The district also pulls information from the Virginia Department of Transportation, area police and the weather service.

"This combined information yields the best decision for the safety of everyone across our large School Division," Walts noted.

Apparently the decision makers like their days off. Look, a frozen puddle, we must close the entire system because someone might slip and go boom. Beyond belief. Great message to send to kids.

I think safety first - there are a lot of kids who are "walkers" and there are a lot of kids who drive themselves. I drove through our high school parking lot today and there are still some icy spots and the sidewalks are not clear. The last thing we need is broken legs and students' cars sliding into each other. One more day will get us through the weekend and, if Monday is already a teacher workday, then the students could safely come back on Tuesday. The additional rest for both students and teachers does a body good!
