Update: See Tuesday's school plans.

Prince William County Public Schools will be closed Monday, Dec. 9, 2013.

Sunday's weather included a heavy coat of snow, followed by sleet and rain, making roads dangerous for the Monday morning commute.

"On Monday, December 9, 2013 Prince William County Public Schools will be closed due to inclement weather in certain areas," the district noted in a message on its website. "All school division activities including Professional Development sessions are cancelled. SACC will not open."

"The decision to change the school schedule is not made lightly," Superintendent Steven Walts wrote in a letter to parents this fall.

The district's transportation staff monitor roads and weather conditions in busy and remote travel areas of the county. The district also pulls information from the Virginia Department of Transportation, area police and the weather service.

"This combined information yields the best decision for the safety of everyone across our large School Division," Walts noted.

It's a failure of leadership that Steven Walts will not alert families to school closings in a timely manner. 5am the day of??? No opportunity to rearrange child care, adjust commute, work from home arrangements, instead it's a 5:00am scramble trying to call people confirming all the "back-up plans" you make the night before with neighbors. It's lazy and sloppy at best, considering every other Superintendent of schools in the area can make the call the night prior. WHY does Mr. Walts sit on his hands and how can this be changed?

Good news, Heather. Snow day news comes early. We've updated the post and schools will be closed on Monday.

Hey thanks, this is fantastic timing. And makes for a good story in and of itself. Superintendent Walts calling a snow day 11hrs before school starts instead of 2hrs prior IS making history. So, maybe he reads The Patch. Who knows?
