Snow Day Decision from Prince William County Public Schools

Will schools close for Friday? We've got the answer.

Prince William County Schools will be closed on Friday, January 3, 2014.

A thick layer of snow and ice Thursday evening in most parts of the county made roads treacherous for the Friday morning commute. The conditions made a three-day weekend inevitable for Prince William County students, just a day after they went back to school following the winter break.

The message from Prince William County Schools: On Friday, January 3, 2014, all Prince William County Public Schools will be closed due to inclement weather in certain areas. Code Red for employees. All school division activities including Professional Development sessions are cancelled. SACC will not open.

"The decision to change the school schedule is not made lightly," Superintendent Steven Walts wrote in a letter to parents this fall.

The district's transportation staff monitor roads and weather conditions in busy and remote travel areas of the county. The district also pulls information from the Virginia Department of Transportation, area police and the weather service.

"This combined information yields the best decision for the safety of everyone across our large School Division," Walts noted.
