Woodbrige High School Amps Up School Spirit

Upcoming plans for WSHS' homecoming parade, game and dance.

Back-to-school bells have officially rung and students are saying goodbye to summer as they ease back into their daily routine of classes, studying and homework. But for students at Woodbridge Senior High School there is much to look forward to: homecoming week just around the corner.

The activities get rolling this week with nominations and voting for the homecoming court. With the exception of the homecoming king and queen, who will both be members of the senior class, all princesses and escorts will be announced Sept. 20.

Each class will elect two princesses and two escorts, while the senior class elects three of each and then votes one male and female into the position of king and queen to be announced at halftime of the homecoming football game.

Homecoming week culminates with a big pep rally and parade from Antietam Road to WSHS on Friday, Oct. 1 and the traditional homecoming dance from 8-12 p.m. Saturday evening. Tickets to the dance go on sale Sept. 27 and all Woodbridge students are invited to attend these events.

"We plan these events to rally school support for our football team, who will be playing Forest Park, and to develop a strong, united student body," said Student Activities Leadership Council co-teacher Katie Benjamin. "Homecoming is about stepping away from class competition and uniting as one Viking family."

Benjamin said the pep rally and parade generate very strong student support, while approximately 40 percent of students attend the dance. There also won't be any changes to the format of homecoming, as Benjamin said the school is deeply rooted in tradition.

"For example, we have hosted a parade every Friday of homecoming since the start of the school," said Benjamin, a WSHS grad herself.

Even though homecoming week doesn't begin until Sept. 27, the SALC is already hard at work planning for the multiple events of the week.

"Homecoming is completely student driven, with the teachers just there for guidance," said Benjamin. "They do everything from picking a theme, which is "a night at the movies" this year, to picking spirit week day themes and decorating for the dance. It is really all them. "

Though Benjamin said the spirit days are still being chosen, the current selections are super hero Monday, comedy Tuesday, Disney Wednesday, celebrity Thursday and green Friday, for which all students will wear green to the pep rally, parade and football game.

"Hopefully our football team can look up into the crowd and just see a sea of green," said Benjamin. "We want everyone to see what a fun, spirited school Woodbridge is."
