20 Days of Summer: Time for Labor Day Festivals

When is the end of summer? Not until you enjoy this last summer holiday.

By Greg Hambrick

Before we reach the official end of summer, we have the unofficial end of summer. Today, Monday, Sept. 2, we’ve got festival ideas to keep you busy on this final holiday of the season.

The last day of summer is Sept. 21. Or, you can look at it this way: The first day of fall is Sept. 22. Patch has found something for you to do each day as we count down until summer passes us by.

Check our events calendar to see what’s happening in our community, and add your own events!

The Herndon Labor Day Festival runs from noon until 6 p.m. on the Town Green, with music and crafts, as well as a wine and microbrew tasting. Entertainment includes Ducky Duke & The Vintage and Blue Label, among others. There will also be several cooking demonstrations, including “Get Your Kids Cooking!” Admission is $10 for the festival and $20 if you add the wine and microbrew tastings. The Town Green is at 777 Lynn Street.

Good Shepherd Catholic Church brings its 38th annual International Festival to the Mount Vernon community from noon until 6 p.m. today at the church. The Labor Day tradition includes ethnic dishes and drinks, as well as live entertainment and children’s games. There will also be an artisan row, a bingo and a raffle with a grand prize of $10,000. The festival raises money for the Shepherd’s Gate grant program. The church is at 8710 Mt. Vernon Highway. Shuttle service will be provided from Mount Vernon High School.
