Weekend Planner: Fit and Fun Outdoors

It's that time of year again to gear up for some great, fun outdoor activities that will keep you moving.

Somehow it is so much easy to be physically active when it is warm and sunny out. Summer is the time to get healthy and fit outdoors, and there are many avenues to do so.

Try Golf! has a beautiful, non-stressful, nine-hole, par-3 course that is perfect for a leisurely couple hours and much less expensive than a full course. You can get some sun, a nice walk, and a fun game at the same time.

Check out the new at Veterans Memorial Regional Park. Designed for skateboarding and inline skating, it is a great way to burn energy, practice some skills, and have fun outdoors. It is non-supervised and pads and helmets are required.

Go biking or trail hiking on some of the gorgeous paths in the area. Prince William Forest Park has miles of beautiful forested paths, and Mount Vernon Bike Paths likewise has miles of gorgeous paths to explore.

Kayaking is another fun, outdoor activity, and there are multiple venues in the area, including Fountainhead Regional Park and the Occoquan Reservoir. You can rent kayaks, canoes or other boats, and life jackets and explore the beauty of the Occoquan. Go at a good pace to burn some calories or just take it easy and you’ll still get some good exercise while enjoying being outside.

And of course water parks are an ever-popular way to get some sun, let the kids run around and still stay cool. WaterWorks Waterpark at Andrew Leitch Park and SplashDown Waterpark at Ben Lomond Park both opened this past weekend and offer fun, outdoor time for the whole family.

So spend some time outside, enjoying the sun and energy that ensues!
