Weekend Traffic Alert: Rolling Roadblocks on I-95 Near Dumfries

If you see a helicopter hovering over the highway, don't be alarmed.

Between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Sunday drivers will see rolling roadblocks and a hovering Dominion Virginia Power helicopter.

Traffic will be slow-moving or stopped at points on north and southbound Interstate 95 between Exits 150 and 148 in the Dumfries/Triangle area of Prince William County.

"Dominion Virginia Power will be using a helicopter to remove four aerial marker balls attached to overhead utility lines located over I-95 between Exit 150 (Joplin Road) and Exit 148 (Russell Road)," said Virginia Department of Transportation in a release Wednesday. "The rolling roadblock is necessary to protect vehicles in case debris falls onto the roadway while the helicopter removes each marker ball."

Dominion Virginia Power spokesperson Le-Ha Anderson said they are removing the balls as part of a reliability program that includes upgrading the transmission line. The company will replace the balls later in the summer.

VDOT said state police will be on scene Sunday.
