Polar Plunge Saturday: Freezing for a Reason

Members of the Prince William County Police Department are set to splash around in some very cold water in the interest of supporting the Special Olympics during the Polar Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant near Dumfries.

The Special Olympics is an organization that is supported by law enforcement officers throughout the United States and in 45 countries. The Polar Plunge, where people plunge into the frigid Potomac River, also helps support the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Prince William Police Officer Luke Dean said the event last year raised more than $60,000 for the Special Olympics. “Last year, we were able to outfit 300 athletes for the Special Olympics, which helped send them to the Summer Games and throughout the year in other events, sports leagues and things like that.” 

Dean said freezing in frigid water for a little while pales in comparison to the efforts the athletes put forward at the Special Olympics. “You get inspired by what the kids do.” 

Those who wish to freeze for a short time in the Potomac can register online or in person at the restaurant on the day of the event. The day-of registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Tim’s Rivershore Restaurant at 1510 Cherry Hill Road near Dumfries. The Plunge will begin at 2:30 p.m. Registration fees start at $100. 

“Once citizens register, they need to raise a minimum of $100. The more money they can raise the more prizes they can win,” Dean said of the door prizes that include T-shirts, sweatshirts, umbrellas, luggage and more.
