Lady Vikings in Hitting Slump

Woodbridge Senior High softball team loses three straight to reach a record of .500.

The Woodbridge Senior High School varsity softball team dropped three straight games last week and is now fourth in the Cardinal District. Despite the .500 record and the team's current slump, the Vikings have talented players at all positions and could be championship contenders if they only remained consistent with their efforts. Senior Lindsey Slover, starting pitcher and one of the team captains, showed signs of brilliance and composure as she pitched her way out of multiple bases-loaded situations against Gar-Field and Forest Park. She also had a fairly decent week at the plate, with the best day being against Stonewall Jackson when she hit three for four, walked once, and stole a base. Slover has committed to play at Ferrum College …

Gar-Field Basketball Star Poised for Greatness

Senior Marcus Knight reflects on basketball success at the district, regional and state levels.

Marcus Knight has been playing basketball since he was 9 years old and has no memory of ever wanting to do anything else. Although he studies the moves of great players like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, his childhood idol was his father, with whom he practiced almost daily. The walls of his room are lined with poster-sized photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia highlighting his four years at Gar-Field High School. Get daily and breaking news email updates from Woodbridge Patch by signing up for newsletters here. Marcus Knight's name will be inked into the history books as one of Gar-Field's great players, and by that he is humbled. “The team we had was like a family before we even started,” said Knight. “I wish I could do it …

SPEAK OUT: Did the 'Skins Give up Too Much to Move Up?

Tell Us: Should the 'Skins draft a franchise quarterback or fill another need?

The NFL Draft has finally arrived and the Washington Redskins are sitting in the No. 2 spot in the first round. ESPN projects the 'Skins will select Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin, III. If RG3 comes to Washington, it will be the first time the Redskins have drafted a quarterback in the first round since Jason Campbell in 2005. Griffin threw for more than 4,000 yards and rushed for almost 700-yards last season while reaching the end zone 47 times. The last time the Redskins drafted a Heisman Trophy winner was 20-years ago when Desmond Howard joined the team, according to the Washington Times. But to move up in the 2012 NFL Draft, the 'Skins gave up a king’s ransom. To move into the St. Louis Rams’ spot, the Washington Times reported …

Gar-Field's Top Tennis Players Aim to Increase Financial IQ

International Baccalaureate program prepares them for success on and off the court.

The official slogan of Gar-Field Senior High School is "School of Champions." It's a bold slogan. The numerous sport team banners that hang throughout the campus, though, are a testament to the athletic skill of past and present Gar-Field students. There's another bold slogan that Gar-Field could adopt, though: "School of Overachievers." Get daily and breaking news email updates from Woodbridge Patch by signing up for newsletters here. Many Prince William County parents are aware that Gar-Field is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

Woodbridge Coach Earns 110th Career Victory

Woodbridge defeats Potomac in 12 innings, 7-6

With a runner on second base in the bottom of the 12th inning against Potomac High School Thursday night, Woodbridge Senior High School senior Justin Petok stepped into the batter's box for the sixth time. The Panthers had just made their third pitching change of the night, so Petok settled into his stance and waited, unsure of what to expect. He swung through a fastball pitch and sat on an off-speed ball. Then, on the third pitch he made contact, which seemed to catch Potomac off-guard.  The ground ball skimmed across the mound—barely missing the glove of pitcher Drew Bringvel—into center field, which brought Chase Upham across home plate for the walk-off win and coach Jason Ritenour's 110th career victory. The three-hour marathon game …

Teddy Says He'll Win the Nats' Home Opener Race

Gallery: The Running Presidents prepare for the Nationals' home opener with a visit to Greenspring.

In their last public appearance before Thursday's home opener, Teddy, Tom and George visited Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield.  Abe had another engagement. The Washington Nationals open their home season at Nationals Park Thursday at 1:05 p.m. against the Cincinnati Reds.  The Nats are 4 - 2 on the season, having just won two games in their three game series against the New York Mets. While at Greenspring, the president's ran their race — Tom won — then visited with residents and their guests.  In addition to posing for pictures, Teddy, Tom and George flirted with the ladies, played cards with the residents, and shot some pool. Teddy "said" (with a thumbs-up) he's sure to win the president's race in the home opener. It would…
