Babur Lateef's new television ad may be flashy and creative but Prince William County School Board Chairman Milton Johns says it's out of context and misleads voters. The ad, which Lateef has asked supporters to help fund so it can run until Election Day, accuses incumbent Corey Stewart of ignoring local issues while accepting $37,500 from the minor league baseball team Potomac Nationals, which plays at a Woodbridge stadium. The ad's setting is a baseball game and criticizes Stewart for numerous things, including turning down $17 million in federal funding and 40-percent increases in class sizes—a claim that concerns Johns. A group of local grassroots volunteer Democrats gathered at the Daniel Stuart Square offices of Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi to hear former Governor Tim Kaine and Senator Toddy Puller speak during a rally on Saturday. Dr. Babur Lateef's campaign announced Friday he has the endorsement of United States Senator Mark Warner. Lateef is running as the Democrat for the Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors. “Today I am proud to endorse Dr. Babur Lateef for Chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors,” said Senator Warner. “As a former Governor and now Senator I know how important Prince William is to the economic success of the Commonwealth. Incumbent chairman Corey Stewart, Democrat Babur Lateef and Independent John Gray answered questions from the business community last Tuesday. Prince William County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the forum at the Northern Virginia Community College Manassas campus. All three candidates agreed that one way to deal with both issues is to make the county more business-friendly. The campaign for Babur Lateef, the Democratic challenger for Prince William County chairman, responded to allegations Lateef is under investigation over the foreclosure of his home last year, but failed to confirm or deny any of the allegations. Longtime Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul Ebert also hasn't returned phone calls about whether he received a complaint about Lateef. Lateef and Ebert are both Democrats. Michael McLaughlin, Lateef's campaign manager, sent an email Thursday night, more than 35 hours after the first of numerous emails and messages were left for both McLaughlin and Lateef. Several Prince William County politicos have told Patch today that the Democratic candidate for county chairman, Babur Lateef, might be the target of an investigation into the foreclosure and auction of his home last year and that state party leaders may be asking him to bow out of the three-way race. Lateef and his campaign manager have not returned numerous phone messages or emails since 9 a.m. but at least one Virginia political pundit has been blogging about the situation since yesterday.
