U.S. Senate candidate responds to 10 questions posed by Patch readers in Northern Virginia.
A few weeks ago, we asked Patch readers in Northern Virginia to throw out some questions for George Allen and Tim Kaine, both vying for the U.S. Senate seat in Virginia. So you asked and the candidates answered. Read George Allen's responses here. Tim Kaine's answers, published below, are unedited. 1. There is considerable reporting in the popular media that Social Security and Medicare are in financial ruin and in need of a fix, but every time one person dares to speak-up and suggest constructive measures to save the system, the other candidate attacks that person for being insensitive to the needs of seniors and claims the proponent of modifications wants to dismantle the programs. How would you address these issues knowing full well …

Officials are updating the registration roll.
State board of elections officials are making steady progress in updating the voter registration roll in Virginia which lists more than 10,000 people as being registered voters even though they’ve died. The task is enormous—elections officials are pouring through some 60 million records in the Social Security Administration's death master file, said Nikki Sheridan, a spokeswoman with the Virginia State Board of Elections. So far, officials have sifted through 15 million Social Security records obtained through the National Technical Information System and matched them against the current list of registered voters. They have 45 million more to go. The information has been shared with local general voter registrars who are taking steps to …

Kaine held a higher education roundtable Thursday with Northern Virginia students and parents.
Former Virginia governor (2006-2010) and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine (D) held a forum Thursday with Northern Virginia students and parents on the future of higher education. About 30 people gathered at Villa Bella Restaurant in Burke. Kaine's staff said invitations to the event were based on recommendations from local education and political leaders. "The United States has dropped from first to 16th in the world for the number of 20 to 30-year-olds who complete some form of higher education after high school," Kaine told those gathered. "We still lead the world in the number of kids who start college," he said. "Kids say they had enough to get started but not finish. The thing we really have to do is make higher education more …

From Tim Kaine's campaign: Wednesday, former Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine shared his economic vision in Prince William County with federal contractors and Latino community leaders. While speaking with federal contractors at Group W in Triangle, Kaine expressed the need to level the playing field so small businesses can succeed and compete for federal contracts. He outlined his balanced approach to deficit reduction, which seeks significant cuts while finding new revenues for targeted investments. Participants overwhelmingly agreed with this method. "Budget cuts are not just about math," said Kaine. "They are about judgement. If you balance the budget solely through cuts you will hurt the economy, and Virginia's more than …

Light turnout expected due to slim pickings on ballot.
Low Turnout in Woodbridge Updated 4 p.m. Usually during general elections there are three "rushes" of voters: before polls open at 7 a.m. while people are en route to work, at lunchtime and before polls close at the end of the day. But today's GOP primary yielded no rush crowds in the area as of noon. At three precincts in Woodbridge, the day was so far summed up as "quiet" and "slow." At Fred Lynn Middle School, there was no line and polling officials said it was quiet most of the day. As of noon the precinct had 23 voters. The scene at Dean Kilby Elementary School was similar, two polling station were open and 24 people had voted as of noon. Belmont Elementary School totaled 63 voters just after noon, with no line as well. "We thought …

Only Romney, Paul on ballot; Santorum, Gingrich supporters could be a wildcard.
Virginia is one of nearly 20 states that hold open primaries, meaning Democrats and independents are allowed to vote in the Republican primaries and vice versa, according to FairVote.org. It's unclear whether Democrats or independents will choose to vote in Tuesday's GOP presidential primary in Virginia – or what the extent of their impact will be. But it happened in Michigan, where last-minute robo-calls asked Democrats to vote for Rick Santorum. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won, but not by a huge margin. On Tuesday, Romney, the Republican frontrunner, will be on the ballot in Virginia along with Texas Congressman Ron Paul. They are the only two candidates appearing on Virginia's ballot. It's possible Democrats could cross over …
